Mike Brown, our treasurer, subscribes to a bi-monthly newsletter called "Bottom Line Personal" that, among other things, publishes a list of web sites for just about every purpose imaginable. Here are some examples that may be useful to members:
For those looking
for a phone number of an individual or business, see
www.switchboard.com.
For those wondering who starred in the movie Western Union, see www.imdb.com
For those who think the
only interesting thing to look at in the NY Times is their daily crossword
puzzle, go to
www.nytimes.com and
sign up for their premium services. For about $20 a year you can print
copies of earlier puzzles.
For those looking
for a zip code, go to
www.usps.gov and
enter the address and, voila, out comes the code.
To gain instant
access to a powerful search engine, go to
www.google.com
and download their free task bar.
And
for those of us that like a ride on the dark side there is always
www.irs.gov
where just about any tax question can be answered or form and associated
brochure requested. Software for preparing and submitting a tax return
electronically can also be found there.
On another subject, an unsolicited notification that you are the winner of a lottery or drawing should be viewed with skepticism no matter how official it appears. You are probably the target of a scam, and, if you respond, the sender will solicit funds to process your "claim", and, of course, you will never receive your "winnings". Most of these frauds originate overseas. See http://www.hoax-slayer.com/lottery-scam-list.html or www.scam.com/showthread.php?t=2873. Posted 9/19/05
